Fall cleaning checklist: your guide to a cozy, organized home

Fall is a natural reset point — summer gear is done for the year, and the holidays are close enough to make clutter feel urgent. A weekend spent working through the house room by room pays off for months.
Entryway and mudroom
Swap sandals and summer jackets for boots and coats. Anything that didn't get worn all summer is a candidate to donate. Bikes, patio cushions, and coolers can move to storage until spring.
Closets
Pull everything out and sort into keep, donate, and store. Off-season clothing you're keeping but not wearing is one of the easiest categories to move into a small storage unit, freeing up real closet space for fall and winter wear.

Garage and shed
Lawn equipment, hoses, and outdoor furniture can be cleaned and stored for winter. If your garage is doing double duty as storage year-round, a small offsite unit can free up space to actually park a car again.
Before the holidays arrive
Do this pass before decorations come out of storage — it's much easier to find space for holiday boxes in a home that's already been decluttered than to fight for space in a cluttered one.
A 5×5 unit is usually plenty for a seasonal rotation of clothing, decorations, and outdoor gear.
