A step-by-step moving checklist for a smooth move

Moving is one of the most disruptive things most people go through — but a good chunk of that stress comes from disorganization, not the move itself. Working backward from your move date with a clear checklist turns a chaotic few weeks into a manageable list of small tasks.
8 weeks before
Start decluttering room by room. Anything you haven't used in a year is a candidate for storage, donation, or the trash. If you're downsizing temporarily, this is also the time to compare storage unit sizes near your new place.

4 weeks before
Book your movers or truck rental now — availability tightens fast in peak season. If anything is going into storage, reserve your unit this week too; facilities near popular move-in dates fill up quickly.
2 weeks before
Start packing the rooms you use least. Notify utilities, banks, and subscriptions of your change of address. Confirm your storage unit's access hours and gate code if you'll be dropping items off before the move itself.
Moving week
Pack a "first night" box with essentials — chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes — so you're not digging through sealed boxes on day one. Label every box with its room and a rough contents list; it saves hours when unpacking or when a mover needs to know where something goes.
