Student Storage Guide
Student storage is a different problem from a normal move: you're not relocating permanently, you're bridging a 3–4 month gap between when the dorm or lease ends in spring and when the next one starts in fall. Get the timing and sizing right and it's the cheapest, lowest-effort part of the whole school year.

This is the scheduling logic that actually matters — plan storage around it, not around a generic moving checklist.
| Program type | Move-out window | Move-in window |
|---|---|---|
| Most Canadian universities | Late April – early May | Early September |
| Co-op / internship programs | Varies by work term (Apr, Aug, or Dec) | Following term start |
| Year-round or trimester programs | Check term-specific dates | Check term-specific dates |
Sizing for dorm and apartment contents
A dorm room — bedding, a mini-fridge, boxes, a small desk chair
A shared apartment room or studio — add a mattress, dresser, and more boxes
Splitting the cost with roommates
- →Splitting one 5×10 three or four ways between roommates is almost always cheaper per person than everyone renting their own 5×5.
- →Look specifically for short-term or 4-month lease terms — some facilities offer a summer-specific rate instead of forcing a standard month-to-month with no discount.
- →Ask about a student discount directly; it's common but rarely advertised on the facility's own site.
Packing student-specific items
Mini-fridge
Clean and fully dry it before storing — leave the door slightly ajar with a box of baking soda inside to prevent mildew smell over the summer.
Mattress
Store upright in a mattress bag, not flat under other boxes — flat storage under weight can warp the foam or coils.
Textbooks
Pack flat in small, tightly-filled boxes — books are heavy, and a half-full box of books collapses under anything stacked on top.
